Pakistan Motorcycle Tours: The Complete International Guide

Why Pakistan is the World’s Premier Riding Frontier

Pakistan is home to the densest concentration of high peaks on Earth: five of the world’s fourteen 8,000-meter giants and over a hundred 7,000-meter peaks collide across the Karakoram, Himalaya, and Hindukush. Northern Pakistan offers raw, scale-defying mountain roads with genuine warmth and legendary local hospitality.

The Core Expedition Routes

Every expedition in Northern Pakistan revolves around several legendary corridors. The Karakoram Highway (N-35) provides the high-speed backbone from Islamabad to Khunjerab Pass at 4,693m. Branched off this backbone are the high passes: Deosai Plateau (4,114m), Shandur Pass (3,734m), and raw dead-end canyon tracks like Shimshal Gorge.

Route Strategy

Never pack too much distance into a single day in Pakistan. A 160 km day through high river gorges can easily require 6 hours due to photography stops, goat herds, and loose gravel switchbacks.

When to Ride: The Alpine Window

The high-altitude riding season in Northern Pakistan runs from mid-April through late October. High passes like Deosai (4,114m) and Babusar (4,173m) are buried under snow until June. Spring (April–May) offers blooming apricot orchards in Hunza, while autumn (October) brings golden poplar leaves and crisp, cloudless skies.

Choosing the Right Bike

Heavy 1200cc adventure bikes are unnecessarily exhausting in loose riverbeds and narrow single-lane mountain shelves. We recommend agile 150cc dual-sports or modern mid-weight adventure bikes (like the CFMOTO 450MT) with spoked 21/18 wheels, long-travel KYB suspension, and tubeless tires.

Visas, Licences & Permits

Pakistan now issues an online e-Visa for over 175 nationalities, usually approved within 48–72 hours. You must hold a valid motorcycle licence from your home country. Special restricted zones in Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa require team security registrations, which are handled directly by our expedition operations team.

Guided Expedition vs Solo

While solo riding is legally possible, traversing remote passes without a support vehicle carrying tools, spare tires, and luggage carries serious risks. On our expeditions, a lead rider sets the pace, a sweeper ensures nobody is left behind, and a dedicated 4x4 carries all luggage so you ride unburdened.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need off-road experience to ride in Pakistan?

For pavement-centric routes like the Karakoram Highway, confident street riding and mountain switchback comfort is sufficient. For Deosai, Shimshal, and Shandur, basic to intermediate gravel confidence is required.

What is the food like during the tour?

Expect hearty, fresh local food: grilled mountain mutton, fresh river trout, dal, handmade chapati breads, apricot dishes, vegetable curries, and chai at every scenic stop.
